The following is a list of Labs we did in class before the Pi-Day Activities in class.  This is a simple list of instructions and resources so you can finish each activity and turn it in.  Here you go.  Have fun!!

LAB ONE:PI POETRY

WRITE A POEM USING THE DIGITS OF PI:

THE FIRST WORD NEEDS TO HAVE ONLY 3 LETTERS.  THE NEXT WORD ONLY CAN HAVE 1 LETTER.  THEN THE NEXT WORDS HAVE 4, 1, 5, 9, ETC.  YOU CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE DIGITS OF PI TO CREATE YOUR POEM.

OR WRITE A "PAIKU"

1ST LINE = 3 SYLABLES
2ND LINE = 1 SYLLABLE
3RD LINE = 4 SYLLABLES
4TH LINE = 1 SYLLABLE
5TH LINE = 5 SYLLABLES
6TH LINE = 9 SYLLABLES

AND SO ON . . .

EXAMPLES:

The Storm: by Mike Rollins
3Flash, Rumble
1Rain
4Awesome thunder
1Wind
5The wind will plunder
9As did the pirates from on yonder
2Raid, fall
6No! My ship is sinking
5The water stinging
3Quivering
5The storm moves onward
8I'm tired, I'm cold, I sink, I die.

Now I, even I, would celebrate in rhymes inept,
the great immortal Syracusan rivall'd nevermore
who in his wondrous lore passed on before
left men his guidance how to circles mensurate.

===============================================

LAB TWO:PI ART
Math Pop Art Posters

CREATE A DESIGN USING A COMPASS AND STRAIGHT EDGE.  USE AS MANY CIRCLES IN YOUR DESIGN AS YOU CAN.  MAKE IT BE COLORFUL, NEAT AND PRECISE.  CONSIDER SYMMETRY AND ASSYMETRY, CONGRUENCY & SIMILARITY.  IF YOU DON'T HAVE A COMPASS, YOU MAY HAVE TO BE CREATIVE AND USE A STRING AND PENCIL, A CUP, A BOWL, ETC.

Apoyo Para las Tareas de Hoy

¡Hola!

Ojalá que están pasando una muy buena noche.  Aquí están las tareas que les había prometido.

1  =  Racism essay   (English Language Arts)

So today in class we reviewed the term persuasive essay.  And we talked about how an essay is something that uses facts to convince someone else to believe in your opinion.

synonyms for persuade generated by class:

convince, sway, carry, influence, induce, stimulate, cause, argue, reason, entreat and prevail

Please use tonight to brainstorm with your parents about their experiences to find facts (real experiences of your own, your family, the world) to convince someone to change their prejudice against a particular race.

Possible scenario ideas generated from class to write about.

1     A new Muslim girl transfers into our class and feels that she will be treated poorly because of how she dresses and because of her religion.

2     Your parents invite a new family in the neighborhood to dinner and when they get there you see that they have a different skin color.

3     You are dining with your family in a restaurant and overhear the waitress speak very poorly to a Tongan family and you hear her use negative racial stereotypes.

4     A Chinese man moves in across the street from you.

5     A cashier charges a different price to 1 person in line because they are _________ .

6     A new president of the US is elected and they are not of the majority race / gender.

7     My sister is speaking ill of a new foreign exchange student in her class.

Again the purpose of this assignment is to help you prepare to write an essay.  The homework should look something like this:

Name                                                                       Scenario Chosen
Don Cody                                                                 T 15 Feb 2011

I     Proof 1 to persuade someone to change their behavior.
       A     Personal fact, story, etc
       B     Personal fact, story, etc.
       C     Personal fact, story, etc.

II     Proof 2 to persuade someone to change their behavior.
       A     Personal fact, story, etc
       B     Personal fact, story, etc.
       C     Personal fact, story, etc.

III     Proof 3 to persuade someone to change their behavior.
       A     Personal fact, story, etc
       B     Personal fact, story, etc.
       C     Personal fact, story, etc.

Remember that if you use tonight to prepare, the essay you write tomorrow will be very easy.  Good luck.  I'll be excited to see what you've come up with in the morning.

2  Matching formulas to their appropriate figures.

Match the following figures with either the appropriate Area, Volume, of surface Area.

TRIANGLE                                            A  =  b * h

SQUARE                                                V  =  l * w * h

RECTANGLE                                        V  =  (1/2 b * h) * l

TRAPEZOID                                          V =  1/3  l * w * h

RHOMBUS                                             A  =  1/2 b * h

PARALLELOGRAM                             A  =  b ^ 2  (base squared)

RECTANGULAR PRISM                      A  =  b * h

TRIANGULAR PRISM                          A  =  b * h

PYRAMID                                              A  =  1/2 h * (b1 + b2)

                                                                SA =  2 * l * h  + 2 * w * h
                                                                                  + 2 * l * h

                                                               SA =  1/2 b * h + 1/2 b * h
                                                                         +  l * h + l * b + l * s

Virtual Websites for math

Good Evening:

Tonight's homework consists of 2 interactive models to practice what we are learning in class: Geometric figures and their measures.

Go to the link on the top right of the blog and click on USU Virtual Math.  Then go to the section marked by Geometry and 6-8th grades.  You will use 2 activities to accomplish some investigation and then answer a challenge question.

Activity 1:  Areas of irregular shapes

LINK

Alternate website if the above doesn't work properly.  Normally you can download the JAVA and it will go when you restart the computer.  But here is the other one.

ANOTHER INTERACTIVE GEOBOARD

1st Explore and see what you can create.  I suggest you "clear" the board and see what you can draw with the "bands".  The more you play the easier the assignment will be.

If you don't know a vocabulary word go to this site.

MATH DICTIONARY

2nd Try to create the following shapes.
  • Draw each answer
  • Label its height and base
  • write the area you find

1.  Draw an acute triangle with the area 3
2.  Draw a rectangle with area 10
3.  Draw a parallelogram with area 25
4.  Draw a trapezoid with area 18
5.  Draw an isosceles triangle with area 10.5
6.  Draw a hexagon with area 25
7.  Draw a decagon with area 16
8.  Draw a rhombus with area 6
9.  Draw a right triangle with area 50
10.  Draw a scalene triangle with area 10
11.  Draw a triangle that is scalene and right
            with area 28
12.  Draw a triangle that is obtuse and isosceles
            with area 6
13.  Draw an octacagon with area 14
14.  Draw a dodecagon with area 18
15.  Draw a square with area 26

GOOD LUCK & HAVE FUN

El Teoría de las Inteligencias Multiples

Good Morning everyone:

I would like you to use EDUSS and Utah Write this weekend.  Don't forget about the incentives.  It is really important that you prepare for the state writing assessment and this is a great way to see where you currently are.  Thank you to those that have already taken a test online.  And EDUSS will also let us know what you know and what you still need to learn to be ready for 6th grade.

You are all awesome!  I hope that you are not still too mad for being Guinea pigs in the social Colonial experiment.  We will discuss how the same things happened to the colonists and how many did choose to rebel against King George even though they loved being English.

The main item for you to do is to do the Multiple Intelligence analysis.  Please go to the following website and then follow these steps:  Have fun!

Multiple Intelligence Test link

Step 1:   Take the test yourself.
Step 2:    Print the test (or save the file or write the number at the bottom to turn in)

Step 3:    Have your parents take the test for you.  (It can be interesting to see what others think of you)
Step 4:    Have your mother take the test.  (for herself, you will use this to compare to your own test)
Step 5:   Have your father take the test.  (for himself.  you will use this to compare to your mother and to you.)

Just a quick note that any member of your family will work, but you will get more information about genetics and heredity if you use your mother/father and grandparents to do this.

Step 6:  Use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the tests and the forms of intelligences that exist in your family.  Here is a link if you need help to come up with an idea to create a graph.  Also write to me about your graph and tell me what you have discovered.

Again, have a great time.  And expect other family activities throughout the month similar to this one.
